Louisiana's Post-Voting Rights Acts Advancements and Ongoing Struggles
This panel discussion explores the evolving landscape of voting rights in Louisiana, focusing on the historical legacy of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) and its contemporary challenges - the tension between enhanced minority representation and current legal efforts to dismantle race-conscious redistricting. This session provides an in-depth analysis of the transition from the "first stage" of the VRA—dismantling Jim Crow barriers—to the current "second stage" focused on ensuring meaningful legislative representation through majority-minority districts. Participants will analyze Louisiana v. Callais, analyzing the 2024–2025 legal battles over the state's congressional maps and the potential SCOTUS-driven weakening of the VRA Section.
This CLE will be hosted from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana (500 Poydras St, New Orleans) in Courtroom C-501. This CLE has been approved for 1 credit hour. The session is free with lunch provided, but advance registration is required.
